Managing Your Time:

Tools on the job

Avoid cutting work time short by doing things that don't contribute to job productivity. Wasting time costs the employer money. The toughest part of time management is beginning a task on time and finishing it on schedule. If the task doesn't have a scheduled deadline, estimate how long it will take to complete the task, and work toward it. Planning your work saves time. Foresee what tools are needed and have them on hand.

Personal Habits:

To meet the demands of being a Boilermaker apprentice maintain your health by eating well-balanced meals, exercising and getting enough sleep. You should also avoid heavy smoking or drinking as well as drug use. Consuming alcohol or use of drugs at work is "emphatically" against apprenticeship rules, as well as employer's regulations. The way you dress for work can affect your job performance. Jeans and heavy woven cotton work shirts are always recommended regardless of the weather. Always wear leather boots, gloves and safety glasses. Avoid wearing contact lenses because of flash burn caused by eye contact when welding could cause them to bond to the eye. Instead, have prescription safety glasses made to wear to work.
