The name of the 1st Award was the Donald G. Whan-Charles E. Bartlett Boilermakers Apprenticeship Award of Excellence. These two individuals contributed a great deal of time and energy to support the Trust Funds and in particular the Boilermaker Apprenticeship Program across Canada. As the Apprentice Program is jointly sponsored by the Union and contractors, the Boilermakers National Training Trust Fund Trustees passed a motion agreeing to name the 1995 Award and Banquet after Donald G. Whan and in honor of Stewart W. McKnight. Each year after, the award name will be changed to honor a new Contractor Representative that has contributed to the progress of the programs. The Award is presented each year to the outstanding apprentice in Canada who wins the National Competition. The actual award is a bronze sculpture depicting a boilermaker journeyman giving information to an apprentice. The large sculpture will be held for the year following the competition by the Local area that the winning graduate apprentice received his/her training. A second smaller bronze sculpture replica will be given to the top apprentice. The other apprentice contestants will receive a Recognition Award for their participation and commitment to the program. The winner of the Canadian competition will then travel to Kansas City later in the year to compete in the Boilermakers International Outstanding Apprentices Eliminations. The Canadian Apprenticeship discontinued sending a candidate in 1997. Recipients of the Donald G. Whan Award
