James F. Precht Award

(Western States)

In May of 1987 a committee from the Nine Western States consisting of Wayne R. Rice, Committee Member, Ronald Whiteman, Secretary, and Darrell Hickman, Area Coordinator, served as judges for the Southeast eliminations   held at Local 40, Elizabethtown, Kentucky, with the awards being presented in Lexington, Kentucky on May 6.

When the Nine Western States Committee returned to their area from judging the Southeast competitions, the Nine Western States approved the outstanding apprentice procedures in their June committee meeting and held their first competitions in Local 549, Pittsburgh, California on November 11 and 12, 1987.  The winner received the same awards as those in the Southeast Area.  When the scores were totaled it was a tie and had to be broken by using the grades the Apprentices had received from their related studies.  The $1,000.00 was divided between the two and both received a watch and trip to International Headquarters in Kansas City, Kansas.

The Nine Western States Committee chose James F. Precht, deceased International Vice-President, as the name of the Western States award.

James F. Precht was initiated into the Boilermakers Union in 1937.  From 1937 through 1940 James worked throughout Tennessee, Missouri, Kansas, Iowa, California, and Oklahoma.

In 1940, James was appointed Business Manager of Lodge 179, Denver, Colorado.  He was instrumental in the organization of several union shops and in having the Boilermakers recognized in the construction field.

After returning from the Army in 1946, James worked as acting Business Representative for Local 667, Charleston, West Virginia at their request.

In 1948 he returned to Colorado as acting Business Manager until 1954 when he was elected Vice-President for the Rocky Mountain Area, where he served until his retirement on June 1, 1977.
