Orientation:

Apprentice

Employers expect an apprentice to have some problems when learning a new job. To help the apprentice "settle in", an employer will assign apprentices to an experienced individual who will help them become familiar with the site and the job. This may be a one-on-one assignment, or an assignment to a crew.

The employer may have an orientation and safety program which will introduce the apprentice to both the company and to the new job. The information is invaluable.

A Boilermaker Apprentice, will probably realize that the more experienced Boilermakers will put them through their own kind of orientation. They may tease the apprentice, send them looking for tools that don't exist, or have the apprentice run errands for them. This is called "gopher work"-you are asked to "go for" this or "go for" that. The apprentice must keep their sense of humor about this type of treatment. Despite this type of kidding, the foreman and most of the other Boilermakers will be eager to help.
